The Eintracht Frankfurt transfer window turns into a disaster with the Elye Wahi affair
On January 24, 2025, Elye Wahi left Olympique de Marseille after six months to join Eintracht Frankfurt. The German team did not hide its joy in getting its hands on the striker until June 2030. As with Hugo Ekitike, who was sold at a high price to Liverpool, the idea was that the former Lens and Montpellier striker would relaunch in Germany before being sold to the highest bidder. But this time it didn’t work. After a complicated year on the other side of the Rhine, the native of Courcouronnes was sent on loan to OGC Nice before finding playing time and pleasure in a championship that he knows like the back of his hand. If the Aiglons experienced difficult times collectively and they did not come far from the descent to L2, Wahi did the job.
A case that makes a lot of noise
In 18 appearances in all competitions, he scored 7 goals and provided 2 assists. A more than honorable record for the footballer born in 2003. The feeling of duty accomplished, he left the Côte d’Azur at the end of his loan even if the Gym would have liked to keep him permanently. Happy with his loan, Frankfurt planned to surf on it to try to sell him and thus finance the transfer of Arnaud Kalimuendo, on loan this season from Nottingham Forest. An almost flawless plan. Almost, because bad news fell last night. The Athletic revealed that Wahi is under investigation for rigged bets. The facts date back to May 17 during the draw (0-0) between Nice and FC Metz. The attacker is suspected of having voluntarily received a yellow card.
At the same time, sports betting sites were surprised by suspicious bets concerning him. If the LFP has confirmed that an investigation is underway and that the player was interviewed by the police on May 29, he benefits from the presumption of innocence until proven guilty. This Thursday, the FIF reacted regarding this matter, specifying that it has not been officially seized of any judicial or administrative procedure. Initially blocked in the United States for the Elephants’ second match against Germany (this Saturday at 10 p.m. French time), Wahi was finally authorized to travel to Canada by the immigration services.
A hard blow for Frankfurt
Eintracht Frankfurt can take a breather, especially as club managers, notably Markus Krösche (45 years old) and Axel Hellmann (54 years old), are expected to attend the match. They plan to talk with their player, who is finally present. On the other side of the Rhine, the Wahi affair is not exactly good news. The Germans were counting on the showcase represented by the World Cup and a good tournament for their player to sell him as best as possible this summer. But this affair is very bad. “Eintracht Frankfurt now faces a transfer market catastrophe”writing Bild before saying more on the subject.
“Eintracht Frankfurt is now also aware. Wahi being under contract with Nice until June 30, the Hessian club is not directly involved at the moment and must await the conclusions of the investigation. This is why the club has not yet made a comment. However, one thing is certain: these serious accusations come at the worst time for Eintracht. The striker is expected to be sold permanently this summer, with Frankfurt hoping to get around €20 million for him. This project is now seriously compromised. The millions of euros from the sale of Wahi are essential to the transfer so desired by the club of Arnaud Kalimuendo (24 years old). The Frenchman returned to Nottingham Forest after his loan spell in the second half of the season. However, a permanent transfer is strongly desired, and he himself wants to stay in Frankfurt. If the sale of Wahi fails, this transfer will become extremely difficult.
An impacted transfer window?
Bild continues: “Frankfurt’s management therefore hopes all the more that the accusations made against their player are unfounded and that he remains an attractive player for the markets. But the longer the investigation drags on, the weaker his negotiating position becomes. Until there is a verdict, no one will want to recruit Wahi. If found guilty, he would face severe penalties, including a lengthy suspension. For Eintracht Frankfurt, it would be a real nightmare.” Hessen Schau is also concerned. “Elye Wahi faces serious charges. French justice is investigating for suspicion of match-fixing. (…) For Eintracht Frankfurt it is a disaster (…) The Wahi whirlwind also affects Eintracht”launches the German publication before developing its remarks.
“The events surrounding Wahi also affect Eintracht Frankfurt. At the World Cup, Wahi is expected to put himself out there to find a new employer who would pay almost what Eintracht itself put on the table for Wahi in 2025. A sale ranging from 20 million euros would probably have been a good deal for Eintracht given Wahi’s meager performances at Frankfurt. Money that Eintracht could well use to pay Wahi’s successor, Arnaud Kalimuendo. For Wahi, nothing less than his career is now at stake. If he is convicted, a suspension is likely to follow, in addition to a sentence. And even without a conviction, it is unlikely that the last few days have been kind to Wahi’s market value. Either way, it’s a big sum for Frankfurt. Which he will most likely lose. Eintracht did not wish to comment at this time.” More than a transfer, it is a career that is at stake because the footballer could be suspended if he is found guilty. But we are not there yet. He remains innocent pending the outcome of the investigation. But it is certain that all this is already impacting Wahi, who could pay the price during the transfer window.
