Rangnick extends Austria deal to 2028 amid AC Milan interest
Austria have announced Ralf Rangnick has signed a new contract to remain as head coach until at least Euro 2028.
Rangnick took over in April 2022, signing a two-year deal at the time following Austria’s failure to qualify for the World Cup in Qatar.
However, under his leadership, he led them to a round-of-16 exit at Euro 2024, losing 2-1 to Turkiye, before also guiding them to the 2026 World Cup, after which his current deal was due to expire.
Their campaign is due to kick off against Jordan in Group J on June 16, with Rangnick set to become the second head coach to lead Austria at two major international tournaments (World Cup and Euros), after Josef Hickersberger (1990 World Cup and Euro 2008).
Austria’s best performance at a World Cup was in 1954 – they finished third. This is their eighth appearance at the tournament, but their first since 1998, when they failed to get out of the groups.

Austrian Football Association Supervisory Board Chairman Josef Proll was thrilled to get the new deal over the line before their opening match, saying: “My special thanks go to Ralf Rangnick.
“The fact that he has chosen Austria and his team shows how important this project is to him. It is a true matter of the heart for him.”
Rangnick has overseen 46 matches as Austria head coach, winning 28 of those (D8 L10); his 60.9% win rate is the highest he has managed with any team.
The German had been linked with the vacant AC Milan technical director job and was supposedly their primary candidate.
However, reports suggest the chance of a move broke down as he wanted full control over the club’s project, including the decision over the new coach – who could be former Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim – and directors.
