Gordon’s England place up for grabs, claims Nevillle

Anthony Gordon’s place in England’s starting XI could be under pressure, according to Gary Neville.

Gordon, who joined Barcelona in a big-money switch from Newcastle United before the World Cup, has started England’s first two games at the finals.

The 25-year-old played 72 minutes against Croatia, and then 65 minutes against Ghana, but he has struggled to make a telling impact.

Gordon has created two chances, completing two dribbles, having attempted seven, while winning six of 14 duels. He has had three shots across both matches.

And Neville feels Gordon’s place is at risk, with Marcus Rashford having looked sharp in his two substitute appearances so far.

“Anthony Gordon – he’s probably the one that’s under the most pressure now,” Neville said on the Stick to Football podcast after England’s 0-0 draw with Ghana.

“We all thought he probably wouldn’t play today. We thought that maybe [Rashford] would come in or something like that, but he [Gordon] stayed on.

“I think he’s under pressure now. I think he’s the one that’s going to find it a little bit difficult to keep his spot.”

England are now sure of their place in the knockout stage, and still have an 81.7% chance of topping Group L. Thomas Tuchel’s team face Panama on Saturday.
