‘I want to become a legend’ – Undav aims to retire at Stuttgart

Deniz Undav has revealed he wants “to become a legend” at Stuttgart and retire at the club.

The 29-year-old recently signed a new contract with the Bundesliga side to extend his stay until 2029, with his previous deal having been set to expire in June 2027.

After initially spending the 2023-24 season on loan at Stuttgart from Brighton, he made a permanent move the following season for a reported €26.7m (£23.1m).

Since the start of the 2023-24 campaign, only Harry Kane (98) and Serhou Guirassy (66) have scored more Bundesliga goals than Undav (46), who has also directly contributed to the third-most goals (64 – behind Kane’s 119 and Guirassy’s 71).

He also helped Stuttgart reach the last 16 of the Europa League last season, before they were knocked out by Porto.

He scored three goals and provided six assists in the Europa League. He had the joint-most assists in the competition (level with Emiliano Buendia) and registered the joint-second most direct goal involvements (behind Buendia’s 10).

Undav, who won the DFB-Pokal with Stuttgart in 2024-25, hopes to retire at the club before potentially taking on a different role.

“A love has developed here,” Undav said in an interview on the YouTube channel Hrstryagency, as quoted by BILD.

“Ideally, I would like to end my career here – I can already say that much. I’d like to say that I’ll stay here from now on. I want to become a legend.

“Everyone knows I feel comfortable in Stuttgart. I’ve had three wonderful years here. So I thought: why should I leave? I always told my agents that I wanted to stay.

“My plan is to stay here until the end of my playing career and maybe do something at the club afterwards.”
