How Werder Bremen can build a squad capable of competing for Europe

After securing their Bundesliga status for 2026/27, Werder Bremen’s attention is already beginning to shift towards how the squad can evolve for next season. Having retained their top flight status, the challenge will be to move from a relegation battle to competing for places in the upper half of the table, with European qualification as a realistic medium-term objective.
The 2025/26 season has highlighted several structural issues. Defensively, Bremen have struggled for consistency, particularly against teams capable of sustained pressure. Strengthening the centre-back position with a more commanding presence and improving depth in the full-back areas would provide greater stability across a full campaign.
Improving quality in key areas
Midfield remains another area for development. While the current options offer work rate and tactical discipline, Bremen lack a consistent creative outlet capable of unlocking compact defences. With the expected departure of Jens Stage, who has been instrumental for the Green-Whites in the last two seasons, Bremen are losing an influential figure at the heart of midfield. In addition to replacing the Dane, adding a player who can progress the ball and contribute goals would significantly improve their attacking transitions.
In the final third, Bremen have shown moments of quality but have not consistently converted chances. Bringing in a reliable goalscorer or increasing competition in forward positions would help raise overall efficiency and reduce reliance on individual performances.
Building on identity and recruitment strategy
Beyond individual signings, maintaining a clear tactical identity will be essential. The team has shown signs of improvement in structure and organisation, particularly in the latter stages of the season. Carrying that momentum into the next campaign will be key.
Financially, Bremen must remain strategic. Competing with the Bundesliga’s top clubs is not realistic, making intelligent recruitment crucial. Targeting undervalued players, particularly within Germany or neighbouring leagues, has historically been an effective approach.
If Bremen can address their defensive vulnerabilities, add creativity in midfield and improve attacking consistency, they have the foundation to progress. Survival marks the first step, but smart squad planning could allow them to shift their ambitions towards European competition in the near future.
