which nation arrives the least tired in America?
A few hours before the opening match between Mexico and South Africa, a question is already running through all the technical staff present in North America. Which selection will approach this 2026 World Cup with the best possible physical reserves? In modern football where the seasons are ever longer, freshness has become as precious a resource as talent. The best internationals completed national competitions, European campaigns, international gatherings and long trips for almost eleven months before joining their selection. This 2026 edition of 48 teams takes place in a particularly sensitive context since FIFA has proposed a very dense schedule and several matches will take place under high temperatures in the United States, Mexico and Canada. For several years, players’ unions, physical trainers and doctors have been warning about the consequences of an accumulation of matches which weakens the organisms. Arriving with a preserved group, capable of maintaining a high intensity for a month, could constitute a decisive advantage in the race for the trophy.
To measure this data which has become essential, the French firm AVISIA has developed a Freshness Index which evaluates the overall energy state of the selected selections. The indicator is based on the analysis of playing time, injuries and physical history observed over the seasons. The objective is not to designate the teams that have played the least but to determine those which are closer to the ideal balance point. A player who has played nearly sixty matches arrives with a significant load and an increased risk of muscle injury. Conversely, an international who has played little or who has just returned from a long period of unavailability often lacks rhythm and competitive benchmarks. The index therefore seeks this happy medium which makes it possible to combine optimal physical condition, sporting continuity and availability of the squad. The calculations are constantly updated according to the last matches, the minutes played, the state of the infirmary and the appearance of the matches. A score above 90 corresponds to maximum form while a score below 50 reflects a group that is highly weakened by physical problems and accumulated fatigue.
Portugal at the top of the ranking
According to the data available before the start of the tournament, Portugal appears to be the freshest selection on the field with an index of 85. A remarkable performance for a nation accustomed to seeing its executives evolve in the biggest European clubs. The Portuguese thus occupy first place in the ranking AVISIA ahead of Brazil, Argentina, France and Belgium, all grouped at 83. “The idea of the freshness index is a bit like the energy gauge of a selection. As we are used to doing at AVISIA, we do it based on data which allows us to find the perfect balance point for the energy and physical freshness of a team. The idea is to position yourself around a team and say that there are players who have played more than sixty games in the season, who will undoubtedly arrive a little tired, with possible risks of injury. Conversely, there are players who have played very little this season or who have been injured very recently, who will lack rhythm. These are the two extremes. The freshness index is positioned right in the middle and find the optimal one for each team. This is what we built with this AVISIA freshness index. And even more so this year where there are a number of matches and playing time which have been very important for the key players during the season and also the weather conditions during the World Cup which are going to be quite hot according to forecasts.», Tells us Julien Legavre, Data Science consultant at AVISIAa French firm expert in data, artificial intelligence and predictive models.
This hierarchy reveals an interesting element since the traditional favorites have generally managed to preserve a satisfactory physical balance despite particularly demanding seasons. Portugal nevertheless stands out for the quality of its workload management and for a workforce relatively spared from serious injuries in recent months. In a competition where the technical differences are often minimal from the quarter-finals onwards, having a few extra percentages of freshness can turn a tight match around, particularly during extra time or in the intensive pressing sequences which characterize contemporary international football. Regular collaborator at French Football WeeklyJulien Legavre explains to us how this measuring tool works. “It’s the idea of looking a little into the history of the data, whether in terms of the World Cup, in terms of players’ actual playing time, players’ injuries and to combine and define the thresholds which are optimal for each player. For each of the teams, if the thresholds are exceeded, we end up with freshness indices which will decrease because there is too much risk of injury, too much poor form or too much lack of rhythm which will degrade this index. Conversely, the players, who arrive at their peak of form with a number of matches which is usual, precisely increase this freshness index. It is an overall score, like our AVISIA Player Index, to have a score out of one hundred closest to one hundred so that the freshness of the team is optimal for very good performances. The lower the rating goes, the less optimal the team is in terms of physical freshness. The idea is to transform this raw data, playing time and injuries into one indicator out of a hundred», explains Julien Legavre ofAVISIA.

Spain and England among the least expensive
The situation appears more contrasted for several major contenders. Germany displays an index of 80 while Morocco follows with 79. The Netherlands obtains 77, Spain 76 and England closes this top 10 with 74. These scores remain largely compatible with a high level performance but they reflect an emerging fatigue according to the reading grid established by AVISIAwho also gave his prediction for the winner of the competition. Organizations are starting to feel the weight of the schedule and certain players are entering the competition with a particularly high accumulation of minutes. For these selections, bench depth could become a determining factor. Rotations, long seen as a simple tactical tool, are now a physiological necessity. Coaches will have to deal with recovery, traveling over an immense territory and sometimes trying weather conditions. Imperfect management of these parameters can quickly turn a competitive team into a weak squad when it comes to knockout matches. This World Cup could thus mark a profound evolution in modern football. For a long time, analyzes focused almost exclusively on technical quality, offensive creativity or defensive organization. From now on, physical data stands out as a major performance indicator. Recent successes have often rewarded teams capable of maintaining a consistent level of intensity until the final days of the tournament. Freshness is obviously not a guarantee of victory but it constitutes an essential basis for fully expressing one’s potential.
“For our part, we rely on raw data which is our own database and which will feed the Avisia Player Index, and therefore the Avisia freshness index. This represents more than eight years of history of all the players, mainly European, which was a little more extended with the World Cup. We have a very large database which allows us to calculate our different indicators, to set up our different AI and machine learning models. It is really on this basis and this history that we have built all of this. And that’s what’s important, is to have the history to be sure to be able to predict it and to be able to repeat the information over time. If I go a little outside the framework of sport and football, generative AIs like ChatGPT or Gemini and others also rely on a very voluminous amount of data. So not the same. That’s why they are very generalists because they really have information on everything they can find on the Internet and on the web which will be extremely generalists. They will rely on real facts and try to reconstruct elements in their answers», concluded Julien Legavre. In a context marked by the multiplication of competitions and recurring debates on the health of players, the AVISIA Freshness Index offers valuable insight into an often invisible dimension of the game. At a time when Mexico and South Africa are preparing to launch the 2026 World Cup, Portugal appears to be the nation arriving with the best physical reserves. It now remains to be verified whether this statistical advantage will stand up to the test in the field, where the final verdict is always played out.
