Weir signs for Lyon after Real Madrid exit
Lyon have announced the signing of Caroline Weir on a free transfer following her exit from Real Madrid.
Weir – Madrid’s all-time leading goalscorer – announced last week that she would be leaving the Spanish capital and has now signed a three-year deal with Lyon.
The Scotland international spent four years with Madrid, scoring 63 goals in her 125 appearances after signing from Manchester City in 2022.
And she is now joining Lyon, who are record eight-time Champions League winners, though they have not won it since 2022, losing 4-0 to Barcelona in the 2025-26 final.
Lyon have, however, won the last five Premiere Ligue titles, and Weir is looking forward to joining the club and challenging for silverware, having expressed her regrets in failing to do so with Madrid.

“I was super excited to hear that Lyon were interested,” she told the club website.
“For me, it’s the club with the most history in the women’s game.
“To be part of this project, the ambition of the club was in line with what I want to achieve, so I guess it was a no-brainer in many ways to commit to this club.”
Last year, Weir became the first Scottish player to be nominated for the Ballon d’Or.
