Nathaniel Brown reflects on ‘incredible’ World Cup debut

Two days before turning 23, Nathaniel Brown was awarded his maiden FIFA World Cup appearance. Starting against Curaçao, the Eintracht Frankfurt defender returned the favour shown in him by Julian Nagelsmann by assisting Nico Schlotterbeck for the go-ahead goal before netting Germany’s fourth on the night.

“It’s indescribable to score in your first World Cup match,” explained Brown, who earned his sixth senior cap. “My family is here. It’s incredible. The other players congratulated me and told me to keep going.”

Brown’s performance earned praise from Arsenal’s Kai Havertz, who said: “You can see how hard he works every day. And to perform like that in his first World Cup match and score a goal at that age is outstanding.” Furthermore, the Arsenal forward noted his compatriot’s personality: “He’s humble and very respectful.

“Nene gives his all every day on the training pitch. These are exactly the kind of players we need in the national team.”
