Everton ordered to pay €46m to Burnley
Quite a penalty for Everton. The English club will have to face an XXL fine towards the Burnley club. In the 2021/2022 season where the Clarets were relegated by four points to the Toffees, Everton broke the Premier League’s financial fair play rules. The Liverpool-based club was even penalized with a 10-point deduction in 2023 for the actions of the 2021/2022 season. Believing that if this points deduction had taken place in the financial year concerned, Burnley would surely have remained, the Clarets took legal action against Everton for compensation and would have been entitled to compensation of £40 million (approximately €46 million).
A decision contested by Everton: “Everton Football Club is surprised and outraged by the decision of an independent Premier League disciplinary committee to order compensation to be paid to Burnley Football Club in relation to Everton’s breach of the PSR Regulations in June 2022. Everton have appealed the decision and clearly assert that the judgment is fundamentally wrong in law and fact.»
