London City Lionesses strike agreement with Godfrey as Putellas rumours swirl

London City Lionesses have confirmed a new deal for Freya Godfrey, as speculation surrounding a move for Alexia Putellas mounts.

The Lionesses enjoyed a fine debut season in the Women’s Super League last season, finishing sixth.

They have bolstered their squad with some high-profile additions, including former England goalkeeper Mary Earps.

But it is the seemingly imminent arrival of Putellas that will make headlines around the globe.

The two-time Ballon d’Or winner is a free agent after ending a 14-year, trophy-laden spell at Barcelona.

And widespread reports now claim Putellas has reached an agreement to join the Lionesses, despite interest from across Europe and North America.

While London City have not yet confirmed the Putellas news, they did announce a new, three-year contract for attacker Godfrey.

She was the Lionesses’ leading scorer in the WSL last term, netting six goals, while also providing a team-high four assists.

“I’ve loved my time here so far. It was amazing to win the Championship title in 2025 and to represent the club in their first WSL campaign, when we had a really strong season,” said the 21-year-old, who has been a part of England’s recent squads.

“We have world-class players here, people who have won World Cups, Champions League titles and know what it takes to win.

“I’m training and playing alongside players I looked up to when I was growing up such as Nikita Parris, who I watched for years in the national team, Danielle van de Donk when I was at Arsenal, and Delphine Cascarino is one of the best wingers in the world.

“To have players like that to train alongside every single day is indescribable.”
