Rohl joins Salzburg with Rangers expected to appoint McInnes

Rangers have confirmed that head coach Danny Rohl has left the club to join Salzburg, with Hearts boss Derek McInnes widely expected to replace him at Ibrox.

Rohl only joined Rangers last October after they made a dismal start to the campaign under Russell Martin, who only lasted 17 games at the helm in all competitions.

The former Sheffield Wednesday boss guided Rangers back into title contention in the Scottish Premiership, but a late-season collapse saw them finish third.

The Gers lost four straight games in late April and early May and ultimately finished 10 points behind champions Celtic, who beat Hearts on the final day to pip them to the crown.

Rohl won 22 of his 40 matches in charge of Rangers, and the 37-year-old will now aim to guide Salzburg back to the Austrian Bundesliga title following a three-year drought.

The German has signed a three-year deal with Salzburg, where he previously assisted Ralph Hasenhuttl before working under Hansi Flick at Bayern Munich and the Germany national team, with his appointment by Sheffield Wednesday coming in 2023.

Rangers chairman Andrew Cavenagh said: “I’d like to thank Danny for his service and commitment to Rangers.

“He and his staff put in a significant amount of hard work during his time in charge, which we are greatly appreciative of. We wish them the best of luck moving forward.”

Widespread reports have indicated that Rangers are now set to make McInnes their third permanent manager in the last year, after he went agonisingly close to ending Hearts’ 66-year title drought in 2025-26.
