Amorim named new AC Milan head coach

AC Milan have announced the appointment of Ruben Amorim as their new head coach.

The former Sporting CP and Manchester United boss has reportedly signed a three-year contract with the Rossoneri through to June 2029.

Amorim has been out of work since he was sacked by United in January, after just 14 months in charge at Old Trafford.

The Portuguese replaces Massimiliano Allegri, who departed San Siro for a second time last month in a mass overhaul, after Milan failed to seal Champions League qualification.

“There are ambitions that stay with you throughout your career, and coaching AC Milan has always been one of mine,” said Amorim.

“I know exactly what this club means: history, prestige and an extraordinary fanbase around the world.

“It is a challenge I embrace with pride and enthusiasm, fully aware of what these colours represent. I can’t wait to get started and to experience every day the passion that drives AC Milan.”

Milan had been in the driving seat for a Champions League position after a strong first half of the season; however, they faltered in the closing stages, winning only five of their final 13 matches (D1 L7) as they finished fifth.

In fact, they ended the campaign outside the top four for the first time in their history in the competition.

Amorim will be tasked with getting them challenging for the title again next season, as well as competing for the Europa League title – the 41-year-old led United to the final of the competition in 2024-25 before losing to Tottenham.

He oversaw 63 games as United boss in all competitions, winning 24, drawing 18 and losing 21, with his dismissal from United coming after he appeared to criticise the club’s hierarchy in a post-match press conference.

In the Premier League, Amorim only achieved 15 victories in 47 matches, giving him the worst win ratio (32%) of any United boss in the competition.
