Rooney would love to see McTominay back at Man Utd
Wayne Rooney would love to see Scott McTominay return to Manchester United after being left bemused by their decision to let the Scotsman go.
After progressing through the academy and breaking into the United first team in 2017-18, McTominay made the switch to Napoli for a reported €30.5m (£26.3m) in 2024.
And the midfielder wasted little to no time in making an impact in Naples, winning the Serie A MVP award as he helped Napoli win the Scudetto in his first season.
Napoli followed up their league title with a second-place finish in 2025-26, during which they won the Supercoppa Italiana.

Rooney believes United should not have let the 29-year-old leave the club, and would welcome a return from the Napoli star.
“I couldn’t believe Man United let him go when they did because he obviously works extremely hard,” Rooney said on The Wayne Rooney Show.
“And at the time they let him go, he was actually one of the players who you wanted on the pitch every week because you felt like players weren’t working or weren’t giving the best and he was impactful.
“He was playing in a more advanced role and he was scoring important goals. When Man United let him go, I was thinking, ‘wow, what’s going on here?’ But you’d love to have him back at Man United now.”
McTominay has scored 27 goals and provided seven assists for Napoli in 80 appearances across all competitions, becoming one of their most important players.
Since joining the Italian club, only Christian Pulisic (41) and Hakan Calhanoglu (38) have directly contributed to more goals than McTominay (34) among Serie A midfielders.
